Locations

I am filming my music video at Humber Bridge Country Park in Hessle, East Yorkshire. This location is perfect for my music video as I orginally wanted it to be in a woodland, Humber Bridge Country Park has lots of character.

Mise-en-Scene

This music video by Florence and the Machine - 'Dog Days Are Over' shows the type of location I want of my product. I want the whole video to be filmed in a woodland area as I feel not only does it have a fairytale edge to it,

Casting and Mise-En-Scene Recce

CAST

Cast Member (Artist) - (Rachel is the one on the right!)

There is only one cast member that is going to be in my music video which is Rachel Escritt, my best friend which is going to be the artist. I've not only chose Rachel to feature in my video because of the fact she is my best friend but I think she will suit my genre and song choice very well. I knew before I started that I needed someone who would feel comfortable and confident with me filming them especially when miming and I knew Rachel would be the perfect candidate for this as she alongside college she works as a dancer in a nightclub which ticked every box I needed in order to have a successful music video. Rachel also looks very good visually and is photogenic which would work well for my ancillary texts - not to mention my music video.

PROPS

The props in my music video are going to be very simple as my performer is the most essential thing. Candles are going to be used in my music video as they symbolize faith, as the lyrics are about

LOCATION
I'm going to be filming at Humber Bridge Country Park and also the Hessle Foreshore for my music video. I have chosen this location as I wanted to set it in a woodland area, this has a huge woodland park with also a pond/lake which I am going to include. Not to mention it's not that far from my house, so it's easy to travel too.

Production Plan (Storyboard)

Production Plan (Ideas and Inspirations)

My music video is going to be a mixture between performance and narrative. The song I have chosen 'Landscape' by Florence and the Machine doesn't have a certain meaning but can be interpreted in many different ways. From reading other opinions from people and research I have come to my own conclusion; I think the song is particularly about some sort of mental illness that may have been caused by the family or runs in the family from the line "it's running in the family". The whole song suggests that she's trying to overcome her problems that are making her feel depressed because it's having a huge effect on her loved ones ("It's cutting down the family tree"), the song also feels very personal, almost as if she's telling a story or speaking to somebody as she says "darling" throughout, in the performance part of my music video I want my actor to sing directly into the camera.

I want my music video to be a set in a scenic area as the song is called 'Landscape', it also gives a sense of freedom as shes dreaming in the music video, I am going to do this by starting the first scene with her opening her eyes. The whole video is going to be shot in the outdoors, in a green land area, I want to use all sorts of different props such as clocks, candles, photographs, flowers which will all connote different memories just like your in a dream.

Lana Del Rey - Summertime Sadness

This video has really inspired me for the colouring and contrast for my video. I love the vintage colouring in the video, a mixture between pink and pink shades which makes the video also appear warmer. There is a sun that glows through the corner of the screen that I would really like to adapt to my own music video as it gives a warmth feel to the video. I also love that the contrast is really low which adds to the vintage look.

 FINISHED PRODUCT

During the whole process of filming and editing I was off due to illness meaning I could not take part. However, from being in the last editing process and talking to members of my group when I got back, I've took a lot of things into consideration and also learnt about the process, including issues that can occur.

ISSUES (THOUGHTS)

There is always minor issues that can occur whilst making a music video. Before we began, I had thought about problems that could may be effect the overall product. One of these were planning, it is important to plan everything your going to do before you do it and create a schedule. This includes times and dates so the whole group can meet etc, and to ensure that you have enough time to film everything you need to before editing.

WHAT WE DID

Firstly we got into a group of four which included Hannah, Mark, Jasmine and myself. Due to members being off, such as myself, my current group combined with another group. The first decision was to decide who's storyboard we were going to use, our final decision was "Florence and the Machine - Rabbit Heart" which I was pleased about as I'm creating a music video for Florence and the Machine on the main task so I was looking for some inspiration. They was a schedule created, in which we worked out when all the group members would be available to work on the product in their frees, lessons etc. The schedule also consisted of when things needed to be done and by when in order to keep on track with the work and make the deadline. Along with the schedule we also planned a "Prop and Costume" list, "Allocated roles list" and also the cast list to decide who would be playing the role of what. Images were taken of the location we were going to film, this was green land around our college behind the building similar to the one in the original video.

Codes and Conventions

The selected brief I have chosen to do is to create the Promotion Package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video; together with two of the following three options: A website homepage for the band, a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD Package) or a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package).

The genre for my chosen song "Landscape" by Florence and the machine is Indie-Pop. There is particular codes and conventions for each type of genre, which is shown in music videos to suit the audience. Indie-Pop takes aspects from both genres and mixes them up to suit a different type of audience. Usually Indie-Pop music videos are either narrative or performance or usually both. It is important that we see performance in the music video as the artist is what the audience particularly want to see, they also sometimes appear in the narrative also. The choice of lighting and colour is usually quite dramatic, some Indie music videos feature in black and white to give an old fashioned feel to the video.

Skills Development

On my Foundation Portfolio, I did two prelimary tasks which were to create a 'Advert for a Perfume' and front cover, contents page for a 'College Magazine'. These tasks were basically for me to get used to using different programmes such as Photoshop which was completely new to me, I'd never used it before. I then also made front page, contents page and double page spread for a 'Music Magazine' that was completely created by myself. The genre of my music magazine was "Indie so it had to have all the codes and conventions related to "indie". For my artist that was featured on the main front cover, contents page and double page spread was styled in very soft neutral colours with added floral patterns. I wanted to make my artist girly, but by not adding bright colours such as "Hot Pink" it didn't look like a Pop magazine.

Before I started my AS Portfilio I had very average skills of some Microsoft programmes such as PowerPoint, Word and Publisher, these were just used in computer work. I used Microsoft Publisher for making posters and leaflets for example. I had also used very amatur editing programmes such as Picaso Google and Picnik which are very basic and nothing in comparasion to Photoshop. I used these in my spare time just for editing photos of my own etc. I had basic experience of editing photographs for example, the contast, the colour and also cropping.

When I started to use Photoshop I found it difficult at first, because it seemed so different to what I've used before and very complexed. The hardest thing to understand were the different layers you need to keep adding in order to use Photoshop correctly and also keep everything in order so if you go wrong you can easily delete a layer. My favorite tool of Photoshop was 'airbrush' effect you could put on, to make it look like your model had perfect-looking blemish free skin! I did this by using the 'Gaussian Blur', creating a new layer and erasing the effect all over a part from the skin so it looked realisitic. I used this on all of my photographs to ensure that they all look the same. I think this is an very effective tool as it's one of the main conventions of a music magazine. I used this tool because it's one of the main convention for any magazine, it brings the photo from just looking like an ordinary image to looking like a professional photograph.

My skills developed in my foundation Portfolio as I got more used to using Photoshop, I started to experiement more. I would Google or Youtube different effects you could use on the software and try them out, even if it didn't always work, I just needed practice. I really came to terms with cutting an individual out of a image, this was a really useful tool as you could copy and paste it into a different image without the background being there and this sometimes looked very effective, and is one of the main conventions of a magazine. To do this you needed to use the cut tool on Photoshop to carefully cut around the image this took time and patience especially if the image wasn't on a plain background.

Music Genre

FLORENCE + THE MACHINE
The band Florence and the Machine are known to be the music genre Indie-Pop or Indie-Rock. Indie pop is an alternative rock music that first orientated in the UK in the mid 1980's. Indie pop was dominated by independent labels and bands such as The Smiths. Typically instruments used in indie pop are vocals, guitar and bass drum. Indie rock is very much the same, except the fact that it oriented in the United States, not just the UK and also brings in different type of music such as "grunge". It was difficult to find artists alike to Florence as the band is fairly individual as there is nobody else around like them.
THE VACCINES
Just like Florence and the Machine, The Vaccines are also Indie-Rock music genre and British! Although The Vaccines have a different style in music, the feel of independent music is still there amongst these bands. The Vaccines have been described using other genres as 50's rock and roll, 80's American hardcore and good pop music with a twist.

MARINA AND THE DIAMONDS
Marina and the Diamonds music genre is indie-pop and electronic. She's quite similar to Florence and the Machine as they both have a very strong vocal. Marina and the Diamonds has more of a "fun" aspect to her music than Florence who sings about dark, serious situations.

THE SMITHS
The smiths are indie-pop just like Florence and the Machine. They was the most important independent alternative rock band to merge from the British indpendent music scene.

Artist and song

I've chosen "Landscape" by Florence and the machine, "Ceremonials".
